The European project BRICkS– Building Respect on the Internet by Combating Hate Speech – aims to combat the spread of online hate speech against migrants and minorities through media literacy and active involvement of web users and web content producers. In this framework, four media education modules -one in each country involved in the project (Italy, Belgium, Germany and Czech Republic)- were designed to raise awareness about fighting online discriminations and hate speech. These training modules were implemented in schools and youth centers between September 2015 and November 2016.

This report provides a synthesis about the design and the experimentation process of these training modules in each national context. It has been elaborated thanks to the materials produced and also collected by each national team: modules description, logbooks from trainers or teachers, quantitative data, examples of students’ productions and finally, some pictures from the workshops.  Continue reading »

This Monday 29th of August, a third participatory workshop gathered about 15 participants, teachers and youth educators, in Belgium around the topic of caricatures, discriminations and hate speech. The goal of this participatory workshop was to collect feedbacks about the pedagogical tool “Draw me the freedom of speech” elaborated by Media Animation team in the framework of Bricks project.

Educational activities and discussions around the challenges of this topic in school and youth environment were the main content of this whole day. The main challenge identified is around the Freedom of speech as a right and out of censorship. It seems that many young people are more willing to condemn the right of freedom of speech when it’s in confrontation with their values.  Teachers express the  difficulty of leading a debate about this freedom of speech precisely.

Bricks-SilenceHateWith the slogan “Silence hate – Changing words changes the world” and the hashtag #silencehate, the European campaign against online hate speech will take-off on 21st March, the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. Even though there is no systematic monitoring of this phenomenon at European level, almost all national and international experts and scholars agree that social media, websites and social networks have become fertile grounds for spreading xenophobia, Islamophobia, anti-Semitic and racist discourses.

The goal of this web-based campaign is to draw attention to the need to prevent diffusion of hatred on the Internet and promote a better use of the web: a common effort which should involve newspapers, web users and social network managers, beginning from such fundamental elements as freedom and participation which characterize the web.

The ‘Silence hate’ initiative is promoted in four European countries (Belgium, Czech Republic, Germany and Italy) in the framework of the European project “BRICkS” – Building Respect on the Internet by Combating hate Speech”, aimed at combating and preventing racism and discrimination on the Internet. The launch of the ‘Silence hate’ campaign will also include the presentation of the studies on hate speech, journalism and migration conducted in the four countries.

The European project BRICKS aims to combat the spread of hate speech against migrants and minorities through media education and active involvement of users and producers of content on the web. Instead of focusing only on the potential negative consequences of youth uses of the Internet, the goal is to explore the opportunities for an intercultural dialogue on the web. In this context, Media Animation, Belgian partner of the project, organized a training for teachers, educators and animators working in various sectors (socio-cultural, youth …) on the theme of freedom of speech and caricatures to fight against hate speech.
